"I love New York, even though it isn't mine, the way something has to be, a tree or a street or a house, something, anyway, that belongs to me because
I belong to it" -Truman Capote
How Did I Get Here?
I was born in New York, but taken away from it at the age of three. I was raised in Pennsylvania, but always wanted to end up back where my life had begun. I decided I would pursue a career in Finance. Big mistake! Although that career path has many opportunities, especially in New York, it wasn't something that would be enjoyable. Attending Queens College was short lived, but a culturally eye opening experience to say the least. I was rarely exposed to the vast amount of cultural people, as well as food choices living in my small town of Brodheadsville. Queens College allowed me to try Halal. With that said, whoever invented the white sauce that comes with the $5.00 meal, including a soda of course, was genius. Besides gaining knowledge of the delicious foods that I have never had before.
I quickly transferred to Queensborough Community College. Yes, I am a fan of a CUNY education. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and have each day be a different adventure. Coming to New York allowed me to follow my dreams because to be quite frank, you can be anything or anyone you want to be here. Hard work, perseverance, and who you know can get you far. I was the President of the Student Nurses Association and was instrumental in the procurement of the nursing logo there. I have already made an impact with that alone, but this was not the last. I am a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse and love what I do. I have no doubts or regrets about how I ended up here or my career choice. I care for premature infants that are smaller than the palm of your hand and I love what I do. Did I mention I love what I do?
Molloy College has also afforded me the opportunity to further my education to receive my BSN. This is the last class I need to graduate, so hopefully it goes well. No pressure.Recently I went away to Las Vegas on vacation. I had an epiphany. I truly realized that New York City is the best place to live. No other city compares and I wouldn't want to live in any other city. The food choices, the cultural exposure, the ability to strive for your dreams, the hungry place of Manhattan, the peaceful village of Floral Park, and the personal choice each day to experience anything at leisure makes this city different from any other. I could be biased, but I doubt it. I look forward to taking this class because I am still the small town woman who gets wide eyed at the site of Grand Central, loves taking public transportation (especially the 7 train), acts like a tourist, and loves to try new types of food and experiences that all boroughs have to offer.
